I’ve decided to try something a little different for my next game. I’m a bit fed up making the same old shit. That being small casual games like Jetpack Something and Ninja Pig in order to try and earn enough to make the next one.
The next one is going to be a Squad Turn Based Strategy in the same mould as xCom and its probably going to be PC/Mac before I even look at mobile. I’ve made a start on the basics which is a grid based path finding solution that can traverse different floors via ladders at the moment, allow for doors and windows in that you can go through them and a two action point system like xCom. Next step is either look at a see through wall shader or destructible environments.
Anyway here’s a screen shot of the prototype so far.
Did this game progress any?
I took it a little further but not much.
It had two modes.
1. The screen you see above which was kind of like a TBS planning stage.
2. The actual movement of the units which was a 4 split screen setup which worked where you could see each character move.
I was toying with some kind of real time action that you could take in the split screen section such as shooting enemies etc but it didnt really feel good so I abandoned it.
The TBS side worked really well as you could have one character pick a lock then have another character go through the door and it worked out where each character would be in that moment of time so the actual movement of all characters ran at once. I think Breach & Clear had something similar but not quite as complex.
For the 4 split screen setup, think Hired Guns on the Amiga.

But real time movement of all 4 characters that you had planned in the TBS section.
Did this TBS come to anything?
